Serondela, The Chobe National Park, Botswana
The Serondela area is situated in the extreme North East of
the Chobe National Park, and is the major area for tourism,
based mainly out of Kasane. The majority of Hotels and Lodges
are based around the small town of Kasane, The Lodges in this
area are mainly large ‘Hotel style’ Lodges with
100 + rooms, although there are a few smaller Lodges and bed & Breakfasts.
Entrance to the Park is through the Sedudu Gate – 4 Kms
from Kasane. Four-wheel drive vehicles are essential, especially
if the intention is to travel extensively into the park - deep
sand in some areas tests the skill of the driver and the capabilities
of the vehicle.
Entrance to the Park requires a daily Park Entrance Fee ( link
to current costs), For local Lodge and Hotel Residents this
is included in the price of your Game Drive.
The Sedudu gate near Kasane also gives access to a public road
that passes for 54 kilometres through the park to Ngoma gate.
Ngoma is the entrance used by visitors from Namibia, with the
border crossing nearby.
The southern entrance to the park is at Mababe gate (where
the smaller more intimate Muchenje Safari Lodge is situated),
along a route that connects with the Moremi Game Reserve and
on to Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Kasane is only
a short (1 hour) drive to Victoria Falls, and many visitors
prefer to stay in a Safari
lodge in Kasane and just spend a day trip visiting the
Falls.
The only Lodge actually inside the Chobe National Park is The
Chobe Game Lodge, a hotel style Lodge overlooking the Chobe
River, which gained fame for being the second honeymoon destination
for Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
In the town of Kasane are:
The Mowana Safari Lodge,
really more a hotel that an safari lodge, which hosts large
groups and conferences (it was the Clinton White House during
his visit to The Chobe National Park.
The Chobe Marina Lodge, the newest hotel style lodge, which
has large spacious rooms with kitchenettes (it was originally
built as timeshare houses, but changed direction mid construction!)
The Chobe Safari Lodge, and excellent value for money hotel
style Lodge, costing half what other Lodges in the area charge,
but offering – in some cases – better standard
of accommodation, although perhaps not the same level of service.
Situated right on the banks of the Chobe River
The Government Public camping grounds at Serondela has been
closed down and a new camping ground has been opened at Ihaha.
Ihaha has modern facilities, an attractive reception office
and is more remote in nature.
